This is the first sculpture in the Solstice Series. For whatever reason, there have been 4 sculptures completed within a day of a winter or summer solstice. This is from the 2011 Winter Solstice when the sun is at its lowest on the horizon and the days promise to begin lengthening!
In ancient Mesopotamian mythology, it is the day the sun god Mithra died and reborn and was often celebrated with bon fires, dancing, and singing. While not a religious sculpture, even today we love to celebrate the promise of the longer hours of light.
