“And he offered the moon to the sky” was created while I was still learning to weld in the 1990’s. Olympic College was at that time a 2-year community college but had a full welding facility due to the Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, WA.

The welding instructor worked with me by adjusting class requirements to lead me further into metal sculpture instead of shipyard work.

Since I did not yet have anything close to a sculpture studio at my home, I created this piece by enrolling in as many “independent study” classes that I could afford after running through the school’s official 2-year welding technology program. It took me 9 months to complete this work because of the limited hours the shop was open, but on the other hand, with 23 strong men and women, “studio assistants” abounded whenever I needed help moving the piece!

As it began to take form, it drew interest from regular students, the Student Body Association, and even the school’s president came by to watch the process.  When completed, the Associated Students of Olympic College arranged to purchase the sculpture for the school’s budding art collection. I’m proud to say that 24 years later, the sculpture still stands prominently on the campus (probably because they can’t figure out how to move the 3,650 kg (8,000 lbs.) rock it is mounted to!
